福建，是中国大陆离台湾岛最近的地方，由于其特殊的地理位置，从50年代起处于海峡西岸的海防前线。

1980年10月，厦门经济特区正式批准成立。福建对外开放以厦门经济特区为突破口，拉开了由点及面、由沿海向山区梯度推进的序幕。

——各类国家级开发区共20个：总数居全国第四位，包括经济技术开发区3个、台商投资区4个、高新技术产业开发区2个、保税港区1个、保税物流园区2个、出口加工区4个、保税区2个、旅游度假区2个。
